The CEO of a contentious plan backed by Silicon Valley billionaires for a utopia in Solano County refused to back down from a $510 million lawsuit against property owners, as he faced a mistrustful crowd of local residents.Former Wall Street investor Jan Sramek on Tuesday addressed about 150 ranchers and other locals at the American Legion hall in Rio Vista, a hamlet of 10,000 people on the Sacramento River near Antioch. His company, California Forever, billed the gathering as a town hall to inform the public and gather feedback about the plan to build a new city with tens of thousands of homes in the next 35 to 40 years. In jeans, scuffed brown dress shoes and an open-necked gray button-up shirt, Sramek highlighted his “blue-collar” background in the Czech Republic — mechanic father, teacher mother — and noted that “a series of scholarships” led to his degrees from the United Kingdom’s prestigious University of Cambridge and London School of...Letters: Veterans’ lives | Education bill

They are those who endure hardships that many others have the luxury of never having to know. Veterans answered “the call” when others wouldn’t, leaving comfort and putting their lives on hold so that others could live theirs. But what happens when they return and nothing seems to feel the same? One veteran life lost to suicide is too much.Senate Bill 928, the Not Just A Number Act, prevents and combats the suffering of those who have been forgotten. By Tara Copp | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The military announced late Wednesday it was grounding all of its Osprey V-22 helicopters, one week after eight Air Force Special Operations Command service members died in a crash off the coast of Japan. The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps took the extraordinary step of grounding hundreds of aircraft after a preliminary investigation of last week’s crash indicated that a materiel failure — that something went wrong with the aircraft — and not a mistake by the crew led to the deaths. The crash raised new questions about the safety of the Osprey, which has been involved in multiple fatal accidents over its relatively short time in service. Japan grounded its fleet of 14 Ospreys after the crash.Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, head of Air Force Special Operations Command, directed the standdown “to mitigate risk while the investigation continues,” the command said in a statement. “Preliminary investigation information indica...Car over cliff halts traffic on Highway 1

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco has not hosted a world title fight in well over a decade. Fight fans in the city are finally getting one this Saturday, Dec. 9 when Bay Area native Devin Haney squares off against Regis Prograis at Chase Center. Boxing promoters have glossed over San Francisco as a host city since cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York traditionally host big fights. San Francisco's appetite for boxing is relatively unknown. However, ticket sales for the WBC super lightweight world championship seem to reveal some answers about the city's interest in the sport.
