GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Jones was on his way to scoring his second touchdown in the Green Bay Packers’ season-opening victory at Chicago when he clutched his left hamstring before crossing the goal line.Jones’ season — and the Packers’ offense — haven’t been the same since. He’s hoping that changes Sunday in Denver. The 28-year-old Jones has missed three of Green Bay’s past four games because of that hamstring issue. Without their most proven playmaker, the young Packers offense has struggled.“It can be hard on yourself, not playing when you want to play, not having that effect you want to have,” Jones said. “Especially coming into this year, I felt like I was just heating up, especially Week 1, it was like, ‘Aww, man it’s going to be a long year for these guys lining up across from me.'”Instead, it’s been a long wait for Jones to get back to full strength. But Jones says he recovered during Green Bay’s bye week and feels as well as he has since before the injury.He’...

Brazil’s Bolsonaro should be charged with attempting to stage a coup, congressional panel says

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian congressional panel on Wednesday accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of instigating the country’s Jan. 8 riots and recommended that he be charged with attempting to stage a coup.An inquiry panel of senators and representatives mostly allied with the current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — who narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in last fall’s election — voted 20-11 to adopt the damning report drafted by Sen. Eliziane Gama. The move was largely symbolic because it amounts to a recommendation for police and prosecutors to investigate, and federal law enforcement officials separately have already been investigating Bolsonaro’s possible role in inciting the Jan. 8 uprising.Bolsonaro has denied involvement in the rioting, which took place more than a week after the right-wing leader had quietly left the country to stay in Florida while refusing to attend Lula’s inauguration.“It’s completely biased,” Bolsonaro said Wednesday of the inquiry, in co...

GOP’s Jim Jordan fails again to win vote to become House speaker and colleagues seek other options

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:43:18 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Jim Jordan failed again Wednesday on a crucial second ballot to become House speaker, the hard-fighting ally of Donald Trump losing even more GOP colleagues who are refusing to give him the gavel.Next steps were highly uncertain as angry, frustrated Republicans looked at other options. A bipartisan group of lawmakers floated an extraordinary plan — to give the interim speaker pro tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., more power to reopen the immobilized House and temporarily conduct routine business. What was clear was that Jordan’s path to become House speaker was almost certainly lost. He was opposed by 22 Republicans, two more than he lost in first round voting the day before. No further votes Wednesday were scheduled. “We’ll keep talking to members, keep working on it,” Jordan, a founding member of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, said after the vote, vowing to stay in the race. The House came to another abrupt standstill, stuck now 15...

While thousands will run the 26.2 miles of the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C., there are some who will tack on some additional miles and run 50 kilometers.Former Marine Phil Pinti is accustomed to taking in a little bit more both on the racecourse and in life. And, he’s no stranger to the twists and turns of both.“Slow is smooth and smooth is fast” is the main piece of advice that Pinti would give to many new runners who will attempt the Marine Corps Marathon for the first time. That means slowing everything down, including our breathing, and taking stock of what’s around you, especially the other people running the race with you.“You realize that it’s ultimately not just about yourself; you’re a part of this running community,” Pinti said during a video chat — his running medals can be seen in the background.Pinti said the marathon is not just about running for him; it’s about courage, commitment and overcoming adversity. In 2016, Pinti’...

An ‘exciting’ glioblastoma study: Boston researchers create virus that can effectively target the aggressive brain cancer

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:43:18 GMT

Could a virus treatment designed by Boston researchers be the key to treating the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma?Brigham and Women’s Hospital scientists report that they have created a cancer-attacking virus that can effectively target glioblastoma. The oncolytic virus treatment extended survival for patients with recurrent glioblastoma, especially among patients with pre-existing viral antibodies. The virus can infect cancer cells and stimulate an anti-tumor immune response, according to the researchers.“Almost no immunotherapies for GBM have been able to increase immune infiltration to these tumors, but the virus studied here provoked a very reactive immune response with infiltration of tumor-killing T-cells,” said corresponding author E. Antonio Chiocca, chair of the BWH Department of Neurosurgery.“That’s hard to do with GBM, so our findings are exciting and give us hope for our next steps,” Chiocca added. This Phase I, first-in-human trial...
