Analysts See Mass. Outmigration Trend As Ongoing Threat Massachusetts continued to record more births than deaths from July 2021 to July 2022 even though the state’s total population shrunk in that span, suggesting that residents decamping to other locales is the primary driver of a trend that has steadily ramped up pressure on policymakers, analysts said Wednesday. The Bay State was ahead of the pack in terms of population growth from 2010 to 2020, surpassing the national median. It was also the fastest-growing state that decade among its contiguous neighbors, according to U.S. Census data presented at a Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation forum. That flipped in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, triggering a surge of what Pew Trusts analyst Joanna Biernacka-Lievestro called “scary headlines.”“Is it true that basically everyone in Massachusetts is just packing up and heading to sunny Florida? Well, not quite, but there is something to it,” Biernacka-Lievestro said.Eighteen states experienced population...

Mapp | The San Diego Union-TribuneWhen Vista resident Michelle Harvey packed an overnight bag so her son could undergo testing at Rady Children’s Hospital in June 2020, she expected to return home the following day. Instead, Mason Harvey was hospitalized for two months as he was diagnosed and subsequently treated for Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease marked by chronic inflammation in the digestive system.Prior to his hospital stay, a blood test showed that Mason had low levels of hemoglobin — the protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. The pignoli cookie is a sweet, simple way to time travel “We need amaretto with these,” my cookie tester opined.I agreed. So much so that I’d have had it as a shot in my honey-vanilla chamomile as I wrote this. I’m not, though. Because there’s no amaretto in the house. With the holiday season fast approaching, that’s about to be remedied, but even so, I now have two notes to write to myself this morning.Always have amaretto, Amy Drew. And, since the years have clearly done a number on your priorities, always have pignoli cookies.Keep your frostings, fillings and whipped toppings. For me, the pignoli cookie is pretty darn close to perfect. (Amy Drew Thompson/Orlando Sentinel)I just finished baking a batch, and these sweet, chewy-delicious pine nut cookies — with that beautiful lacquer of toasty pine nuts on top — are the stuff of nonna’s kitchen, which may be tied to the holidays (they’re so festive!) or just baking with her on a Sunday while the sauce is going. Maybe it’s your uncle they remind you of. Or mom. Doesn’t matter. The point is ...
